The team behind the One Piece card game announced on Thursday that its planned collaboration campaign with McDonald’s Japan has officially been cancelled. According to McDonald’s website, the decision came after the company reviewed its current promotional initiatives tied to its Happy Meals, known as “Happy Sets” in Japan.

Instead of the One Piece promotion, starting August 29th, participating McDonald’s location swill hand out toys from past campaigns with their Happy Meals during the period that had originally been reserved for the One Piece event.
This cancellation follows the recent chaos surrounding the Pokémon Happy Meal campaign, which was from August 9th to the 11th, Happy Meals included a special two-card pack from the Pokémon Trading card game, which one can get until supplies were done. It was reported that many McDonalds in Japan were swarmed by customers attempting to buy meals in bulk and wasted food by throwing them away as soon as they received the cards. This caused the promotion to end earlier than expected

McDonald has then released an apology, stating:
We sincerely apologize for not being able to meet the expectations of our customers who were looking forward to the product due to the early end of distribution.
The company has since pledged to implement measure to prevent bulk purchases in future promotions.
